The Experience

When my wife asked me if there was anything in particular I wanted to do during our stay in Tassie, I only had one request – stay at Barnbougle and play either Lost Farm or The Dunes golf course.

We arrived in the afternoon and checked into our accommodation at the Lost Farm Lodge. Shortly after, I made my way down to the pro shop to scope out what merch I was going to cop (even though I wasn’t teeing off until the next morning). We even drove over to The Dunes pro shop, which is about five minutes away, to have a look around there too.

Lost Farm has a much bigger pro shop with some great merch to remember your stay. I splurged a bit and picked up a 1/20 Barnbougle fairway wood headcover, a bag tag, a ball marker, and a dozen golf balls for my round (unsure if I’d need to return after 9 to grab some more...).

The course looked fantastic, and I had no idea what to expect, having never played a links-style course before. I had the first tee time of the day at 8:30am, which was amazing – it felt like I had the whole place to myself.

Despite it being early, winter, and in Tasmania, the weather was pretty perfect. It was about 8°C when I teed off and warmed up to around 14°C by the end. It even felt warmer, thanks to minimal wind. I wore thermals under my Levels Breakfast Ball long sleeve polo and long golf pants. I considered wearing a beanie, but I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to treat my beloved Breakfast Ball Club House Cap to the round it deserved.

The biggest difference I noticed straight away was the Scottish-like rough, which I could tell was hungry for some of my newly purchased balls, and the deep fairway bunkers that (thanks to my bunker play) might as well be a two-stroke penalty.

Playing this course the week after watching The Open at Royal Portrush, I came prepared with my Texas wedge – and with fairways as pure as some greens, it was a no-brainer choice on many holes.

The greens were super hard. My approach shots (the very few that actually landed on the green) didn’t even leave a divot. I was surprised at the speed of the greens, especially during an early morning round with a decent amount of dew. The ball still rolled fast – something that took a few holes to adjust to.

All in all, it was one of the best golfing experiences of my life. I’d definitely love to go back again one day and replay it – along with taking on The Dunes course.

Results

Lost Farm is a Par 79, 20-hole golf course, with the two extra holes being 13a and 18a – both about 100m par 3s.

The standard 18-hole par is 73. As a current 21 handicapper, my goal was to break 100, as I’d heard it was a particularly tough track.

I managed to get around with what I think is a respectable 95 (+22).

Highlights

Hole 7 – Nothing in particular about the hole stood out, except it was my only birdie of the day.

Hole 15 – An incredible 148m par 3 that runs right along the coastline. Be aware that the restaurant overlooks this hole – so you might have a little viewing party from above.

Closing Thoughts

When can I play it again?!
